My PC is one noisy son of a gun, so streaming stuff to my consoles at night is a nightmare.

I recently saw in a local computer shop an 'HP Media Server', It was about the size of the Indiana Jones box set and boasted a 250GB hard drive and I assumed connected to your router and shared data that way, am I right?

Anyway, my question is would it be better to get one of these ^ things or build little and quiet PC with media centre on? What kind of spec would it have to be and what files could and couldn't I stream to a 360 or PS3 as well as access via my PC?

Thanks and I hope this makes sense.

well my solution, although not what you are asking for

is to have my pc shuttle hooked up to my HDTV and run media portal of that, if i wanted i could put media centre on there and stream from that, tbh I would just spend a little on making your current pc more silent, any help?

id imagine that the HP machine will act as an external hdd and be some kind of NAS (network attached storage) and thus wont support programs such as tversity and the like.

i may be wrong though. do you have any other information eg. what the HP server was called? product id or something?
