Hi guys,

Just a quick one. A while back I used to use my 360/PS3 to stream off my old desktop, which I no longer have, just my mac mini and MBP. What software exists that I can use to stream my media to these devices? I've tried twonky, but any free ones? If not, what's the most feature packed and easy to use to pay for?

My father is in the same boat back up north so I'd like to offer him some assistance.

Cheers.

You could use xbmc (or Plex?) to do this. Although it's mainly used as a media centre itself it does have UPnP capabilities.

There are some other options too:

CyberMediaGate - Never used this, looks quite simple?

If you are ok to pay and already have things converted to iTunes compatible format (.mp4/.m4v/.mov?) you could get either MediaLink or Connect360. Which I know work quite well.

Aye, my housemate has medialink on his macmini. May look further into that. I'll take a look at xbmc/plex though as you say they're more media centres themselves, would prefer something in the background. I assume boxee doesn't offer upnp?

edit - forgot to say thanks, your post is very helpful :)

Boxee is excellent too. It's still in alpha so it's a little temperamental on occasion but I'm very impressed with it, I'm running it on an Apple TV at the moment but it runs on a Mac as well, I used it on a Macbook for a while and it was great.

Hey Mo, yea, I have boxee - amazing piece of software, but my old mans mac mini isn't near the TV so needs some software than can stream to the PS3. I think he'll go with medialink.

Just a bit of feedback, installed ps3MS... the transcoding works a treat as does normal streaming. Will evaluate this for a while longer but seems perfect. Thought it was PC only, not MAC!

Thanks

hmm I currently use MediaLink but that PS3MS actually looks better due to the transcoding... means maybe I could play my MKVs although dunno if it'd do subs...

I'll have a go over the weekend :)

dunno why, but it just started working...

although now when watching a movie, it keeps popping up with "a network error has occurred" despite it all looking fine

ive had a look around the forum on this topic but can't find a solution... any ideas?

Is your PS3 set to auto get DHCP settings automatically or do you specify its IP? I had to do this on my mates that I set up for him and this was the reason. Had to manually configure the IP/network setup.

out of interest, with the PS3MS when you close down the app (press the red x) how do you bring the control interface back up?
