Hi guys.

Got back into Medieval 2: Kingdoms recently and whilst it plays kind of fine at 1680x1050 with pretty much everything on high, its still gets laggy and i would like to be able to add some AA to it aswell. My Spec is in my sig and was wondering whether for this game a new quad core would be better (does it even make use of quad core?) or a new graphics card, like the gtx280 or 4870?

What do you reckon? I mean the CPU would be a little more beneficial for other things such as Auduio composing/ processing on Cubase for my degree but i'm not sure.

Cheers

Yeh its patched up.

Its just i like playing with Huge unit sizes, so normally the battles get to upwards of 3500-4000 men, and it starts to get a laggy, even without AA.

Am i just expecting too much?

Also its not RAM. Ive tried using 4gb on XP and it randomly crashes. Works fine with 2gb. Ive been reading on forums that a lot of people have this issue though. No noticeable performance increase from 2-4 gigs of ram anway as can be expected.

All three are needed for M:TW2, maybe memory is the primary focus but a good cpu and a decent gfx are also needed as i found out when i last upgraded for this games release. The demo was like a slide show on my old AMD system, the move to intel was a massive difference

Yeah MTWII is an absolute beast when it comes to hardware requirements. I couldn't play with units set to Huge for very long with a q6600 at 3.3ghz and a 8800GTS.

Medieval total war 2 is one of the most demanding games you can get, to max it out fully (huge unit scale etc) you would have to have one beast of a PC(£2000+ ?). I think the main problems are simply the amount of units and I don't think the game is as optimised as it could be. Hopefully Empire total war will fully support quad core CPU's.

I think it will support more than 4 cores...

I play at 1280/1024 on [email protected] / 4Gb / 8800 GTS 512 everything maxed out. AA as well iirc.

Runs perfect, although I have never managed to have more than 1800-2000 men in one battle on my side, maybe 4k in total. 4000 is a lot if you meant your army, not sure how you managed that. :p

Can't you push the cpu a bit higher? I would go back to 4gb tbh.

Nice setup!

Some of the epic battles i had - try these for size, a Crusade, with 4 sides, totalling 12,000 men, on screen at once. It was chaos, and carnage. :D

You have to upgrade evenly for M2TW. I'd say start with graphics card though. However just be aware that there isn't really a huge difference between your current card and most of the new ones at the moment.
