Yeah being an island nation I find England is relatively easy to start with. Just make sure that you grab as much land on the isles as you can (or infact you can just start with Scotland, I find that not matter how nice I'm being to them, they always attack you down the line anyway). Only problem with attacking Scotland straight away is that your rep goes down so forging alliances can be a bummer.
It's a good idea to get trade agreements with Spain, Portugal and Denmark early on as you won't be going to war with those for a few turns and you can bring the money in with all the sea trade. If you're patient don't attack the French but simply wait for them to do so, they just can't resist that way you won't lose much standing with the pope.
Don't go crazy with building castles you won't need more than one on the British isles themselves and at the end of the day it's cities that give money to build armies in the first place so do pay attention to economy.
Jerusalem is a relatively good target too it gives a glory bonus to happiness to all your settlements and not really that hard to get. You do have to battle with unhappy population at first but that's mostly due to religion. What I do is just send along a few priests along with the army when crusade is called (although don't directly attach priests to the army as their hamper their pace).
