Mega Machine

I didn't think that hard drive read/write access was a bottleneck in doing any of our distributed computing projects- all my systems have quite old/slow hard drives in them!

Most likely he own's a computer shop and is just showing off.
There is no way whatsoever I would put up with that noise.
You would think that for that kind of cash you would make a quite pc - progress eh

Why not? He did say it was in his kitchen and I expect the mic on the camera makes it sound much louder than it would be IRL.

If I had that amount of money I certainly wouldn't be spending any on keeping it quiet, all performance :D

Considering how blase he was about spending thousands more I would say he is horribly rich [doesn't look it], horribly stupid [and has one fat credit card bill] or, as above, has access to this hardware through his job.

Either that or perhaps he has come into a bit of money and he is spending it wisely...

He might be a bit of a prat but if he should join the OcUK SETI Team I shall proclaim him God of all that is good in the Kingdom of Seti :D

i dont think that was just the mic if you noticed when he pulled out one of the hotswap fans its a 38mm not a 25mm and as we all know 38mm fans are defineatly not quite.

So €4K on SSD drives that do sod all for SETI (or any other DC project). With that much RAM, he could have configured a 4-8GB RAMdisk and got even faster storage performance and €4K in the back pocket (though a UPS would be a good idea). :)

The fans were bonkers. Why on earth they all went to full whack when he pulled one out is beyond me. Mind you, my old dual CPU Dell box could quite easily make similar noise with just two fans. :D

HHD speed does make a differance with F@H
My SMP step times reduced but 5% when I went from a nothing special seagate to a raptor.
Not tried my SSD (home) with the GTX260 (work) yet - may give it a go and see.
