hey folks,

wanted to know if anyone out there has original megahalems cooler (with lga1155/1156 bracket) and tested it on sandybridge chip i2500k+

i have the same cooler on current build Q9550 and may retain it for next sandybridge build just to test it against an antec kuhler h20 920

so does it perform adequately vs something like the AIO w/c 920 kit?

Well im using one on an older 1366 socket cpu, theese run a bit hotter than the 2500k and it copes extremely well with it, so you shouldnt have any issues with cooling. Generally the all in one watercoolers are on a par with some of the high end air coolers. Though they do take up less space. Check the bracket of the mega, as mine features the all in one bracket with mounting holes for s775, s1155/6 and s1366.

The socket 1366 run a LOT hotter than Ivy/Sandy. The cooler will cope fine.

Thanks setter and sldsmkd,

The cooler with just one fan (push) is performing very well with my existing Q9550 (not OC'd) setup

Temps with IBT on Max are well below 50oc and idle around 30oc (cores 3&4 don't show correct reading and at stuck until temps go above stated reading, known issue I believe)

Have sourced some Vipers in push pull config to go on the Antec H20 920 but will also test on Megahalems (with 1155 bracket) to compare on Sandybridge when I get round to purchasing it (prices seem to be going up atm). Would I be right to expect no more than 70oC with IBT-Max with Sandybridge oc'd to say 4.6ghz or is that being optimistic? Both for Megahalems and Antec Kuhler 920.

I'm hoping that the Megahalems does well on Sandy so if I upgrade other system (Q6600) also to Sandy(or Ivy) then don't have to purchase another cooler and can save some notes to spend elsewhere.

I ran a Super Mega (very similar to the Magahalems but with some extra copper) with 2 Vipers in push pull on a Q6600 & it was a fantastic performer.

Taking into account how cool the 2500k runs anyway you'll be able to maximise the performance on your new chip with your current cooler no probs.

Can you buy a 1155 bracket for the megahalems do you know? I have one at the mo on my AMD setup, i think it must be the first gen one and its been great with my PII 955 so i was thinking about trying it with an i5 setup that i am looking to get but it only came with an old intel bracket and an AM2 one. If i cant find a bracket im thinking of trying a Kuhler 620

I believe the 1156 bracket is also compatible for 1155 socket/boards, I've assumed this to be the case as it's listed such on their site

querying google also suggests same

there is etailers selling them for < £5 and one had free delivery so I took the opportunity - still awaiting reciept as missed RM delivery due to work so going to pick it up Sat - unfortunately free delivery offer has expired now

hard to source at fair price as they're rare accessories and as always there's the delivery to consider which may not make it worthwhile

Fine cooler, serving me well - only issue is the height
when you got a windowed case it's more or less touching it and obscuring clear view, plus obstructs any chance of side fan being place on panel

I lapped mine when I originally purchased it but don't think was necessary
performance wise it's excellent - considering my case is dusted up bad, well filters are anyway - due rinse - and that usually knocks temps down 2-4oc
