Hi all

Just need something clearing up, can anyone give any comments on what I'm saying below -

- Prolimatech Megahalems Rev B CPU Cooler ( for I7 950 )
- Akasa AK-FN058 Apache Black Super Silent 120mm Fan - 4 Pin PWM x 2

Connecting the fans to a P6X58D-E board - would I connect 1 fan to the CPU_FAN and 1 to the 4-pin CHA_FAN1 ?

Or is it safe to use a y splitter to run both fans on the CPU_FAN header ?

Could be a stupid question but just want to make sure.

Thanks

Id suggest you get one of theese.

This will allow both apaches to run from the psu with speed control from the mobo's cpu header, as the apaches are PWM fans and your wanting to use both on the cooler, youll need them both running at the same speed, the cpu header and CHA1 header may have the two fans running at different speeds which isnt very effective on a push/pull configuration. Running the same on my own megahelims with akasa vipers.

Does this actually work for you? When I used this splitter on 3 Apache Blacks it just seemed to run at full speed.

Yep, ive used it with sharkoon silent eagle se's, arctic cooling F12's, and my current akasa vipers, you need to have cpu fan control enabled in bios, in my case asus qfan, i then use ai suite's fan expert to calibrate it.

I prefer to use pwm fans as the speed can be controlled by the mobo, quiet when the system isnt under any stress, but ramp up automatically under load. Used pwm fans on my last two rigs with a TRUE black and now the megahelims.

The vipers are very good, use two on my megahelims. Theyre loud at full speed though, strangely though they were a bit quieter on the TRUE i had before the mega, possibly down to fin spacing differences between the two coolers.

Did you connect the 4pin pwm connection to the cpu fan output socket on the mobo, and then change the speeds in the bios?

I connected it to the cpu fan header and turned on fan control in the BIOS but it just ran my Apache Blacks at 1300rpm (in the BIOS, so not really under load).

I've decided it's probably best if I don't use the PWM features anyway as the fans are used on my water cooling rads, which also does my graphics card. Don't want them running slow just because my cpu isn't kicking out much heat!

Found this review of the best fans to use with the megahalems(65 fans reviewed) |Review|

Looks to be very thorough. The Yate Loon D12SL-12 120mm - £5.99 get very good results. However not being pwm fans puts me off.

The most interesting thing I found in the review was that the difference between double(push/pull) and single fans was very small. Only 2 degrees in most cases.

Does anyone know if a P6X58D-E + megahalem inc fans + corsair dominator GT fit ok ?

Well i hope so, i've got the same kinda build, bar i have the corsair XMS3... so hopefully they would fit nicely due to not having high heatspreaders... though cant find out until my pwm splitter cable arrives.. (forgot this when i first ordered my build *doh* got everything else, bar these!)

yeah I was gonna go for the xms stuff also but changed my mind at the last minute so trying to find out if it fits,

received my lancool k62 red today from OC, looks very nice, cant wait to start building.

Im not massively sure on dimensions of the megahalems with fans, but my fenrir is too wide for high profile ram heatsinks on that board

Saying that, its possible to just raise the fan up a bit. Just requires fitting the fan after the memory

think you may have helped me there, fenrir is 107mm wide, mega is 74mm wide, unless I'm just been stupid it sounds like it might fit ok.

I think it should be fine, im using ocz reaper ram, (tallest ram on the market) with a megahelims on an asus p6t dlx v2.
