after a lot of studying, i've found out that my Thor's Hammer is no good for extreme overclocking, well 4.6 to 4.7 ! intel i5 2500, Asrock Extreme 4 gen 3

i've decided to get the Megahalems, the Noctura is too big and ugly...

now what is the most powerful fan for this cooler, i dont want it to be too noisy, are my existing Xigmateks any good, because i dont think they are ?
plus does it need to be push pull... i'm thinking of Scythe or gentle typhoon

thanks

push pull generally gives the best performance, and if you are going for an 'extreme' overclock then it would be recommended. If you think the Noctua is ugly but want the best cooling performance you can get, have you looked at the new phanteks coolers? They come in a variety of colours and look pretty cool in my opinion. They also best both the megahalems and the noctua in terms of cooling.

If you go for the megahalems then the gentle typhoons should be fine I think.

The Phantek looks ok, but only the white/silver, the other colours look a bit naff! i wonder if it'll fit inside my Lian LI PC A17 A.

it costs 70 quid, but the Megahalems will need better fans than my Xigmatek so the price will be even more, but this Phantek might be too big, i'll need to measure my PC when i get home

it's bloody big, i wonder if it'll fit inside my Lian LI PC A17 A, very very good cooling !

yeah I have the white one myself, it looks awesome. The only way to tell if it would fit would be to measure the space between your motherboard and your side panel and compare that with the height of the cooler. To give you an idea though, my case is 8.94 inches wide and the phanteks just fits inside with a little bit of room to spare. Your case is listed as 8.5 inches wide so it might be just slightly too small. However about 0.5 to 1 full inch of my case width is not part of the inside where the phanteks mounts, so depending on the design of your case it may still fit.

And yes, it cools fantastically, you do have to be aware of conflicts with tall RAM though.

yea' not sure, the Mobo mounting plate is about 12mm in from the rear panel, with the Asrock ext 4 gen 3 mobo in front..... oh flipping heck, you've now got me worried HA HA !

Megahalems is 6.2'' tall, phanteks 6.7'' tall, hammer is 6.3'' tall.

i cant check with mobo because i havent brought it yet, i am hoping to get everything at once to save on postage ( mobo, psu, processor, cooler)..... this is driving me flipping grazy

why cant they bloody design it so it fits all cases, because this isn't exactly rocket science is it.

there is no way i can be sure, because i dont know the depth from the MOBO mounting plate, to the face of the i5....:(

thanks anyway, i'll try and google it

ok the dimension from the mobo mounting plate to the case side is 7.5''... this leaves a spare 0.8'', lets hope the processor to the mounting plate is less than this, because it looks like 0.5......i'm not happy with this at all..

Megahalems is safer!

best fan for this looks like the Scythe kaze jyuni at 110cfm, the gentle typhoon at 150cfm is maybe too noisy, but i might be ok because my case has full sound proofing, my Xigmateks might be ok too, but are a bit low at only 61cfm

they use the Gentle Typhoon but at lower speeds, which is about the same power as my Xigmateks...... you only seem to get great cooling at much higher speeds, but this means miles more noise as well, i think my fans will be ok !

yes, because at the reduced noise that i'm after, the Xigmateks are just as good as the Scythe/typhoon etc, they're only much more powerful when they're way too noisy and this is no good for me i've seen threads that the Megahalems achieves 4.6, so this is ok for me.

i played Serious Sam 3 BTE and i'm only getting 35 FPS with the 8800GT, and it looks far worst with Borderlands, so i really do need this new rig.
because i can't see the AI moving, because when i move the mouse from left to right, the screen just goes blurry, so you cant detect movement, it also screws up your eyesight, very uncomfortable, i might stop gaming until my new rig is ready, yesterday was bloody awfall, worst gamming for ages.

i dont really mind because Far Cry 3/ Borderlands 2 arent out till late summer

i tested the new PC last night and it's very quiet indeed, but that's without the cooler, so lets wait and see.

GRAPHICS CARD will be a tight fit too, i'm too scrared to check this ! :D

the 8800GT isn't a very big card, I wouldnt have thought you would have any difficulty fitting it in your case... or are you getting a new card?

yea' i'm getting either the 7950 or the 580gtx, i'm only on 1080p so i dont need anything bigger than this.

the existing 8800GT is just my old card, i think the Lian is ok for room, because i dont have any HDD Trays, these were removed 3 years ago.

it doesn't remember me and i've brought loads of stuff from here, mind you i brought over the phone only !

i've just joined but it only recognises me as a Newbie !

``In this test, the Xigmatek XLF-F1253 fans @ 1500 RPMs ran 1-2c warmer (under load, identical at idle) than the Scythe S-Flex 1900 RPM fans. The Xigmateks are rated < 20 dBA, though, while the S-Flex's are rated at 35 dBA. The tester reported there being a huge difference in sound with a very mild difference in temperatures.

If the quiet Xigmateks could go neck-and-neck with the 1900 RPM S-Flex fans, I would assume that they would out-perform (or at least stay on par with) the 1600 RPM ones while still being significantly quieter (1600 RPM S-Flex is rated at 26 dBA.)

Seeing this pretty much sealed the deal for me, and I ordered two of the Xigmatek fans for my Megahalems.``

yup this is good enough for me too :D:D.....i'll sleep easy tonight

In my experiencewith my ex megahalems was that push pull made no difference.
Neither did going from a cheap akasa smoke grey silent fan to a gentle typhoon.

Great cooler the mega:)

4-5c difference with push/pull over a single fan on my previous prolimatech super mega. Akasa viper fans. Though ive swapped it out for an Alpenfohn k2.

yea' i'm after the megashadow now....:D

i dont like these new coolers, they're so ugly and way too large, they hide too much of the modo..the Phanteks is just about ok i suppose

i looked at all the others, the Venomous X, the Spire Thermax, the thermalright silver arrow, and i kept reading conflicting reviews and i eventually got fed up with it all and settled for the Mega, simply because i already knew that it was one of the best, i could not trust a ``top 10 heatsink review``, because they varied too much.

i.e the Zalman CNPS12X got great reviews, but was total ******** on youtube ! :D

The supermega was a god cooler, on a par with my previous TRUE. However, the k2 is much better, and a lot quieter. I get temp drops off 4-5c at idle and load, and with much lower fan speeds.
