Hi,

Thinking of getting one of these, just like to know if anyone has any reserves about them? Experiences?

The one am looking at is the 1.6 16V 110 Dynamique 3 door:

For me it seems to tick all the boxes:

40+ MPG
Petrol (only do about 6k miles)
Cheap insurance (quoted £300 for the year)
Cheap running costs in general

Can buy one of these in the region of 6-8k dependent on mileage and age etc, the one above has only done 25k and is a 59 plate.

Any feedback appreciated.

Thanks

Drove a diesel version and it was the worst new car I've ever driven.

Not sure about the petrol.

You'll be better off going with a Focus, Golf, Leon. Take your pick really.

As have I and that's pretty much how I feel about them too. They're alright, fine if you're just after something that looks nice.

No idea on reliability etc of the newer model but I would expect it to be reasonable

I had the diesel one of these for a couple of weeks whilst the focus was in the body shop.

Utterly, totally hateful machine. I can't think of a single good thing to say about the car. Steering too heavy when slow, too light at speed, brakes were on or off, clutch feels like it had worn down already (car had covered 7k miles), the interior was akin to the first generation ford ka in terms of material selection and quality, the stereo was terrible - and with such a high level of road noise it rendered it useless as to overcome the road noise at 60 mph you had to turn it up to the point of distortion.

The digital dashboard is totally gash, the fuel gauge is infuriating, the miles left in the tank won't go below 50 - just displays --.

It's uncomfortable, I spent a long long time trying to find a comfortable driving position to no avail.

Both the clutch and throttle (!!) will get stuck under the factory floor mats and try to kill you at least once every journey.

Going back to the stereo, down is up and up is down on the tuner, and I couldn't figure out how to do anything else with it. Totally frustrating.

You have a button to turn the TC off but don't be fooled - as soon as the wheels slip it re-enables itself again. In the snow it just stops the car from moving. Utterly useless.

In short, I hated this car, the design was apalling (try turning on the rear window heater in 1st, 3rd or 5th gear, for example. If you have a drink in the drinks holder you can't put in or pull out the ******* stupid key card they supply to start the car.

And all of that before I get onto the diesel engine.

Just no. Don't buy that.

No :p Compared to every other modern hatch/coupe on the market :p

Hmm well I can only comment comparing it to he current generation focus I drive (company car so woeful engine :( ) which I initially thought was a load of crap but you have no idea how pleased I was to see it when returning that french piece of ****.

Agree. Utter dog ****.

Lol thanks for the feedback guys, really appreciate it. Good writeup shoes. Also good shout on the civic, never really considered them. I did look at golfs, focuses etc, but they were a lot more expensive in comparison. you think a civic type s would be a good pick then? Reliability? Running costs etc?

I certainly rate the Civics really well. I have a 59 2.2 diesel, the engine is really good. My friend just picked up a 1.8 petrol civic and says it's great.

Take both the 1.8 petrol and 2.2 diesel for a test drive, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Brother in law has a 250 RS one of these and it drives very nicely. However I would imagine the RS versions are a world apart in driving dynamics terms in comparison to the vanilla versions.

I've had a scenic for 6 years or so, done 100k+ miles in it, and I'm in the last month of it now.

The good, is the handling. I do a lot of little A and B roads, and I like to drive the (fat) scenic a bit 'pointy' and I am still amazed on how it drives. I had it on snow, ice, flood etc in wales and I never had any trouble with that side of things.

Reliability wise, be very careful, meganes/scenic have a /host/ of recurring issues. The electric windows motors all broke, the fan heater melts, the water in the electric system etc etc it's endless. A bit of research will raise quite a few of these, I had them all!
Of course, Renault has no knowledge of /any/ of these, even if you show up with printouts of hundreds of people having it...

Worse bit is Renault itself, they are useless, and worse than useless. Borderline crooks at the company level. I did services every years (regardless of mileage) at a renault garage, and a few years back then tried to charge me 4K for various repairs that an independent did for 500.

The last service this december, I asked that I felt the car was struggling a bit, smelt, ate oil, and smoked. They didn't find anything wrong, telling me that renault rekons that 1L of oil per 500 miles is acceptable consumption.
I didn't mistype this ^

After a bit of research, I suddenly realised that they had dropped the air filter change from the 'approved renault service' about 3 years ago.

Here's what mine looked like:

12 quid later and a new filter fitted, the car is now as good as new.

In other words, I'll never, EVER buy a renault again...

Hah, seriously? That's worse than an RX-8... ;)

I love the leaf in the airbox.
