I've been thinkin more and more about getting rid of the 205 and looking for alternatives. Stumbled across one of these on Auto Trader and they seem to be reasonably good value for money. Can be had for c.£6k, come with quite few toys, (relative I suppose) leather and 225bhp.

Does anyone here have any experiences of these? I did see there was an R.26 owner on here but I'm guessing that is it a different animal altogether really.

R.26 is totally different, the early ones are suppose to be pants but the later ones very good.

For the same money you can pick up a Civic Type R which just seems a better all round car - and doesn't look stupid from the back!

As said by Peerzy, the earlier one's arent supposed to be as amazing to drive as the later ones, will have the usual french rattles and suspect build quality in places, but will generally work. Fair few hot hatches in this range that could float your boat, worth trying all of them and picking the one you like most.

I'm not set on a hot hatch but I'd seen these and thought they were appealing. It was more the price bracket that they fall into which was the deciding factor.

I guess the looks of these might put people off but they've never really bothered me, I did suspect there would be a reason for them being cheap though. Seems in the What Car? poll they (Renault) are second from bottom in terms of reliability with electrics being an issue (surprise, surprise).

Thanks for the info anyway.

Nothing wrong with them as such. It's just people don't really like the shape. I have had a Megane sport hatch for two years and I love it.

The electrics are not bad, at least I have had no problems. Most of them seem to be made by siemens.

Early ones weren't bad as such, just nothign outstanding about them.

Go quite well, nice big brembos etc, but a little soggy to drive I think.

This was rectified with the cup suspension available, think it started about the time of the Trophy models. There was also a dedicated 'cup' model as well.

Anything that has the cup chassis pack will be a better drive.
