MeganeX superlight 8K

ok so there is an update, and it's quite strange

so yesterday after it was working once i'd reinstalled windows it stopped again. Nothing but connection errors. The official discord channel lit up with issues, everyone was struggle either getting it to work or crap displays. I pretty much spent the day troubleshooting and found something...

Once you have booted the PC, reboot the meganex box! Once you do this, the headset connects and the displays look pretty damn decent. It's gone from pico4 levels of glare to almost quest3, and the edge clarity is almost to the edge of the screen.

To replicate this, I rebooted the PC but not the box. Errors came straight back, struggled but after a while I finally got it to connect. Displays were awful again. Rebooted the box, headset instantly connected and it looks good again.

I'm not confident though at this stage, really too early to tell. I might find another issue with it tonight.

although mine didn't look quite that bad lol I had mainly banding, glare, and bad clarity/smearing 25% from the edges

I've never bought Pimax, but for my sins I am considering the Super or the Dream Air.

One thing that Pimax do have going for them is their returns policy. It's clearly stated you can try any headset out for 14 days and then send it back if you're not happy. And they even pay postage.

If that's true you really can't fault that. At all. Are you telling me that's not the case?
They are a Chinese company based in china, and based on my experiences with them of the promises they make and what they actually do, I would be extremely surprised if they honour that.

They made so many statements to me regarding what I would get by what date and they literally never kept to any of them, including that I would get X refund by X date. In the end I had to create 20 tickets every day just to annoy them to the point that I finally did get PART of the refund, and they still came up with B S reasons why they'd deducted "fees" from it.

I saw loads of people on Reddit and their own forums being offered $50 store vouchers to keep faulty headsets.

Hmmm. This is what worries me about Pimax. When was that though that you had this bother? It seems like their marketing and communications etc has had a huge positive shift in the last 6 months or so.

I think my list is getting whittled down to the Bigscreen Beyond 2 pretty rapidly now though......

Pimax dream air does look pretty amazing on paper, but that's paper......the reality will probably be very different

One advantage of the BSB2 over all the others is that it's steamvr native. They don't make their own compositor so it really is plug and play.

I followed them for a total of about 5 years and in all of that time they kept pulling the same stunts, at least once a year they would come out with "we've really listened and improved now" stuff and someone new at the company takes the lead on comms for a couple of months and then they slide right back in to their old tricks.

I haven't actively followed them in about the last 2 years, but a cursory glance at Reddit doesn't exactly appear to be drowning in praise, and some of the same problems from 5 years ago like bad tracking still seems to be a regular occurrence.

Oh and they still seem to be over-announcing accessories for headsets and not releasing them and then just releasing a new headset before they've even shipped the things for the old headset they promised.

I'm interested in the beyond 2, but rumours keep swirling that Valves next headset could be fairly soon too, so I'm kinda waiting on seeing if that pans out.

personally I think if you're in the market for a new headset then waiting for more news on Valve 'Deckard' is a good choice. If nothing else it will give time for the BSB2, Crystal Super and MeganeX to iron out some issues its definitely in these manufactures interest to get in first.

The Beyond2 is definitely an improved package over the Beyond (possibly the best in 2025 so far), but
- its still wired
- has to upscale for 90Hz resulting in degradation in image quality
- will get eye-tracking for social VR but who knows about DFR
- has better hFoV at the expense of binocular overlap
- needs lighthouse base stations + controllers + audio
- is quite dark
- has more glare than aspheric lenses

Pimax has customer service issues (which you can mostly offset if purchased via a UK retailer), bulkiness and weight, potential mura issues if they purchased cheap displays (TBD), black washout from the QLED panels in dark scenes. The 50ppd Crystal Super is shipping but yes you are right they do tend to announce stuff too early and pivot a lot.

I like what's been done with the MeganeX, I just can't live without eye-tracking and such a narrow hFoV if they can iterate on those areas then hell yes.

What they all seem to suffer from atm is a good selection of affordable uOLED displays i.e. ones large and bright enough to allow the optics to give both excellent binocular overlap and FoV, will Deckard solve that who knows its obviously a manufacturing at scale issue that needs a solution first it seems

Basically there's no perfect headset right now. However early leaks suggest Deckard will be some form of LCD, but until Valve release some concrete info that's not confirmed.

This things a piece of junk

Group of guys found out last night that the meganex compositor renders 3560x3560 and then upscales

I'd have no problem with that - if it was an "option" and fully disclosed (like Pimax's upscale option on the Crystal Light or BSB2 90Hz option) - but if that's true and they're falsely touting the specs wrong and the default option is upscaling with no choice, then that is ******* appalling.

Any linkage/ evidence for this?

it's all on the official discord, someones looking at the code and says it's been written by a university student lol it's all kicking off

Bloody hell what a shambles. The MaganeX was crossed off my list weeks ago but this just nails it now.

Definitely considering the BSB2 for my next PCVR headset. Got to build my new PC first though which is expensive so will have to wait, but that's fine as maybe we'll get news of the Deckard soon.

Looking at their website I see it lists Display Port 1.4 as a min requirement. If this is what the headset uses for connection I'm surprised they even render that high a resolution. Just not the bandwidth for it when running at 90Hz. It probably one of the reasons the Pimax 12K has never seen the light of day as they were trying to integrate dual display port links.
