I've just brought a new Focus with metallic pepper red paint. I've been looking at the meguiars range but there are so many different types. Which ones do I need to clear the paint of any crap and protect it?

the claybar detailer thing is great, takes a fair while but your paintwork will be like glass afterwards. NXT wax is pretty good.

I've got, I think, the entire range, but I've yet to use the full multi-stage wax job - the NXT wax does a damn fine job, and is really quick/easy to use. If I was buying now I would probably get:

Quick Clay Detailer
NXT Wash
NXT Wax
Wash Mit
Microfibre Polishing Cloth
An Illegal Immigrant to do the hard work.

My previous car was a Pepper Red Mondeo and to be honest I didn't rate the finish with NXT Wax and was rather disappointed. I always got better results using AutoGlym Super Resin Polish topped over with Turtle Wax Gloss Guard which is a liquid wax. The NXT shows much better results on my black car, but I still use Gloss Guard over the top as that makes it last much longer.

Definitely go for the Claybar - they do an excellent job. I use Simoniz Max Wax for washing as its only about £3.50 for 5L and seems to do as good a job as vastly more expensive products. Wash mits are good as well.

I have read a few times that the 'decent' waxes (mc'g being the cheapest, thru to zymol) tend to work much better on darker paint.. but as I usually buy darker cars, that's fine with me :)

I might switch to something else when I get my burnt orange Murci :p

Being thick, is the clay just a bar that you rub across the paint? Would this not risk scratching the surface if some dirt was in between?

You spray the panel with detailer first so it just glides over and picks up the dirt etc. Havent used it myself though so cant say for sure :)

Perhaps we should have a sticky like this since we've had quite a few questions pop-up about car cleaning?

Sounds like a plan, someone must be able to put one together? (pretty please!) :p

I've come to the conclusion that your choice of polish/wax depends on

* the type of paint you have
* the condition of the paint
* the age of the paint
* whether it's been repaired before
* the colour of the paint
etc

For my car, with good, dark coloured paintwork I found that Meguiars Stage 1 paint cleaner, followed by Autoglym Super Resin Polish and sealed with Meguiars Gold Class/NXT wax worked best.
