Hi, I got back from uni today and found the following has occurred:

holefc4.jpg

Has anyone seen anything like this before? Has the liquid exploded? I have no clue what could have caused it. Seems like a strange place to go if it was an electrical fault?

It should be under warranty still as I bought it from ocuk last year...

Wow, never seen anything like that before. As said in a previous post a focused picture would be better. What's that red inside the burnt hole?

This is the only camera I have at the moment sorry. If you look very closely the black liquid is a little red the camera just seems to have made it look much more red than it is. Yeah the plastic on the outside has warped as well.... My first thought was that someone had put a lighter/cig up to it but the plastic outside is warped as well not just the hole. Could the sun have somehow done it?

By the direction of the melt pattern on the left side of the monitor it looks like an external heat source in a left to right (as you look at the photo) direction. Almost like a pair of straighteners or similar has melted it.

Yea that is quite worrying.. if it wasn't a problem with the monitor and someone did this while I was out (means someone has keys to my room).

Actually just thinking about it I picked up my shaving mirror this morning which was was kinda facing the screen. I wonder if the sun could have been reflected in off that and focused.....

As far as I know I have not ****** anyone off recently but who knows. I do have insurance yeah.

Yes, also known as an xbox 360 :D

I wanna know if this shaving mirror is just a plain mirror or one that enlarges the image, because a plain mirror doesn't focus light and wouldn't be any worse for the screen than it being sat out in the sunlight, but one that gives an enlarged image will focus the light. Still sounds unlikely though, but so is someone braking into your room and attacking your monitor with hair straightenners :p

Yes it is one which enlarges the image... No one can get into my room (as far as I know). I live in a house not halls of residence. You would think that the burn would be more of a line though due to the sun moving in the sky. The frame is burned then there is a small bit unburned then the actual burn on the screen (going left to right). Weirdness.

I think the shaving mirror theory can easily be ruled out to be honest. I don't think it would be able to melt plastic.

Well it enlarges the image, so I guess it also focuses it so same effect as a magnifying glass. Though I would have thought the sun would have moved before it was able to cause that kinda burn.

Put the mirror back in the same place and angle and see if any light falls on where the monitor was during the day. If it does see if it's hot enough to burn some paper. I agree it sounds unlikely though, but they do use cheap soft plastic on TFTs.

Does it still work? Could give you a clue whether anything inside it blew or overheated.

Every theory sound unlikely so far though. Don't suppose you have contents insurance being a student, I know I never did.

Works totally fine apart from the burned bit :) and yeah I am insured on my parents policy.
