Hi people,
Close friend of mine runs a large Snooker centre.
He spends around £4-£500 per year on membership cards, all done by hand and then on paper seeing when people’s membership etc is coming up to renewal and then they send reminders out.

What I am thinking about is a computerised system where each member has a card with perhaps a chip or strip and some form perhaps of laptop and software so each member when they come in to the club passes the card over, the staff swipe it and it brings up all details of that member.

Now I would imagine these systems exist. But does anyone in here know much about them?
I said I would look into it for him as I know a bit about computers etc. But I don’t know anything about membership systems like this.

Just in the long term I would imagine it would save money. Plus as long as backups are done frequently then data should be perfectly safe.

Hopefully someone here can give some advice.

Thanks

you just need a magnetic card reader and writer. Haven't used them. but I imagine for such a basic thing they are fairly cheap and easy to use.

My local Snooker Centre has a membership system whereby you are given a membership number, and a card with that number written on in pen. Whenever you turn up you are asked for your number, it is typed in the computer and your details come up on screen.

I think it's basically just an Access database. It's been like that for at least ten years and seems to work alright.

It would be pretty easy to bang together a half decent access database, and throw a nice looking front end with passwords ect.

I just searched in (The place where you bid for things online) for one and a few came back for about £30, looking half decent, Must be some sort of application addon for access to input data from a magnetic strip straight into access. Can't be too hard.

magnetic card reader/writer. Seems to be £70 upto a few hundreader for a combined one. Most seem to connect by usb or serial. Then you just need software.

Magnetic Strip reader.

They work through pretty simple function, nothing complecated.

I'll have a look around for some cards with strips on them. Any old inkjet could eisily print on to those that can print onto CD's.

LAN center I used to go to gave you a card, and a #, you only really needed the number, which they'd type in and screen with your photo and details came up and show how long you had left on your membership, etc.

I dont see how this is going to get round sending out reminders at the end of contact? Or are you relying on people using the hall close to the time of expiry and getting a verbal reminder/renew while they are there?
