I was stress testing my 4850 today and MEMIO was hitting 104c I am having problems with the card at the moment, sometimes system freeze / crash in system. Graphics Fan was on 100% and case has good airflow.

The card does not have much dust on it since I have clean it recently.

So what am I todo, I am planning to reseat the heatsink with some MX-3 but surely that will not really fix the memory heat issues? I've read something about the thermal pads on the memory but I don't think OCuK sell them.

Anybody got any ideas about how to make my 4850 cooler, going to be getting a 5870 soon though, just need to temp fix it.

reseating the cooler with fresh paste should fix the problem.

MEMIO actually refers to a location on the GPU, and is usually the hottest...but 104C is a bit too warm...in fact it will probably be throttling around that temp....

That's useful to know thanks.

Will reseat it tomorrow, popping down to the city arms or hob for one or two otherwise would be doing it tonight :p

Okay so I have reseated the heatsink with mx-3 my memio is new hitting 98c with gpu temp being 85.

It does last twice as long in OCCT graphics test before my screen goes blank and I am forced to restart.

Heres some info about the crash point from gpu-z logs, first result is pre heatsink / thermal paste change second is post:

Code:
Date GPU Core Clock , GPU Memory Clock , GPU Temp [°C] , Fan Speed [%] , GPU Load [%] , Fan Speed [RPM] , GPU Temp.(DISPIO) [°C] , GPU Temp.(MEMIO) [°C] , GPU Temp.(SHADERCORE)

Has anybody got any ideas why its crashing?

Hopefully now I have gained enough headroom not to crash in game but still its kind of annoying.

Fan is spinning up fine, I thought it would sound louder on 100% though, but can't hear much over my 2000 rpm cpu fan :P

Also have a intake on the side of the case getting airflow to the graphic card as well.

i'm pretty sure memIO is the memory controller on the gpu core. one of my friends has an asus 4870, similar in design to yours in respect of the cooler, and his memIO is mentally high too. he hasn't bothered oc'ing the card for this very reason.

might be an idea to get a 3rd party cooler
