I have been looking at my activity monitor and notice am using a bit of memory even though not got much working...

I have 202mb free which is green,
426mb inactive in blue how does this get realease if it needed by other apps? sorry to sound soo thick on this

Maybe the OS is pre-loading a load of stuff so it's faster and will free up memory only when needed rather than automatically clear the memory of any stuff you might want to use within a particular session? What OS are you using? Linux, OSX etc

It's OS X being clever.

To quote Apple :
The inactive list contains pages that are currently resident in physical memory but have not been accessed recently. These pages contain valid data but may be released from memory at any time.

Better that it uses the memory than let it go to waste doing nowt.
