Memory advice for Exisiting system.

Hi all,

I've been upgrading incrementally over the past couple of months and my last 'bottleneck' is memory.

I'll be honest, the memory market/compatability/speeds etc. confuse the crap out of me, so I was hoping someone could give me some advice on what the best 'bang for buck' memory would be for my system

Gigabyte X570 Gaming X running a Ryzen 5950x (running stock).

Looking for 128gb DDR4, as fast as possible without having to sell a kidney. :)

lol. Yeah tbh, I don't really visit forums much at all.

It needs to be non-ecc, use case is for work, 3d Modelling/CG Rendering/Compositing/fluid simulations etc. Pretty heavy 'resource intensive' use.
 
I can’t see any 128gig kits on the memory support list for your motherboard.

best bet would to get 4 by 32gig DIMMs running 2666 MT/s that are on the support list.

given this, I might suggest that if this is for business use, you get Z690 and DDR5.

looking at what’s out there, I could actually make an argument for you to go Threadripper

Oh I would love to go Threadripper. I just don't have the funds to drop that kind of cash tbh.
Yeah, I hear you I just don’t know how well your current rig is going to support 128gigs of ram.

I could easily suggest that you get an Intel Optane drive that caches as much data as possible (64gigs or so) as in your use case and budget could use it.

I’d suggest you get 2 kits of 2 by 32gig DIMMS at 2666 MT/s (or even 2133) and of a model that is definitely on the motherboard support list.

It’s your best bet but even then, it might not work so if you could test it before hand, that would be ideal.
 
I've got a 1tb Samsung Evo drive set up as a cache drive atm. Which is working rather well.

Just curious as to why you suggest 2666 memory instead of 3200 (for which the board is rated for?) (I ask that fully aware that I could be missing something really obvious and silly lol.)
 
Compatibility. Once you go to 64 and especially 128gigs, it’s really different to get it to work at higher speeds.

even 3200 MT/s at 128gigs is higher speeds. It puts a ton of pressure on the memory controller and motherboard and you can downclock it to try make it work but it’s best to keep the speeds at JDEC rated speeds.

3200MT/s is actually overclocking.

You would be 4x2R with 4x 32GB sticks, I believe.

I have no idea what you will realistically get to work, but you can always downclock the memory yourself if you buy faster speeds. The suggestion to stick with JEDEC speeds/timings is something I'd do myself with so much memory, but with your use case, you'll probably want the maximum possible performance as long workloads can exaggerate the difference in terms of time/hours saved.
