I have an SLR and a compact camera

I have a 16Gb Class 10 SDHC sandisk memory card

if I put it into my Nikon D7000 it says 445 pictures I can take

if I then put it into my Sony RX100 compact camera which is 20 mega pixels, I can take 775 pictures

why can I take MORE photos with camera that's got a higher pixel count ?

both camera on their highest RAW setting

What ISO settings? The higher the ISO the larger the files get and the fewer you can store. The reason is that higher ISO settings produce more noise which reduces the effectiveness of the compression algorithms.

Nikon seem to be quite conservative with the estimates on how many images will fit on a card. My 64GB card for my D810 states something like 850 images and I actually got over 1500 on it whilst on holiday.
