I am building a rig for a friend in about a week and I have chosen pretty much everything, but I think I can find a better deal on RAM.
Currently I have chosen the following:
cpu: C2Q 8400 (might opt for 9### if funds allow)
mobo: DFI DK T2RS Plus
psu: PCZ ModXStream Pro 650W Modular
hsf: AC Freezer 7 Pro V2
case: NZXT M59
hdd: Samsung Spinpoint F3 500GB
gpu: gf7900 for now, good DX11 card later (when nVidia benchmarks emerge)
The ram I am looking at now is Corsair Twin XMS2 1066MHz (2x2GB), £76
However I found Corsair Dominator 1066MHz 2x2GB for £50 (new)... but the timings are 5-5-5-18, yet there is another version 5-5-5-15 which seems to be around the £105 mark everywhere.
Should I be concerned about getting the 5-5-5-18 version? I am not looking for some serious overclocking, I want to get the cpu over the 3GHz mark which shouldn't be an issue. Is there a known "bad" version of dominator ram which is sold cheaper, and that is what I have encountered?
Is it generally accepted to fork out that much more for the 3ns lower latency at the moment?
If that is the case, can anybody recommend some memory that stands out in the <£80 price range for ddr2 2x2GB 1066MHz? I like the look of the Kingston HyperX 4GB (2x2GB). However I can't get my mind off the dominator price I found.
