Memory compatibility and fsb's?

right so here goes, for the last few weeks ive been trying to get my head around how fsb speed + HT link speed aswell as bus speed relates to your memory compatibility.

e.g.
bus: 200mhz
ht link: 1000mhz (2000mhz really x 2 cores)
memory: what would be compatible?

also,
bus: 133mhz
fsb: 533mhz
memory: what compatibility?

so do these speeds relate to memory at all or is it to do with the memory controller on the cpu?

thanks in advance for any advice, the real reason im trying to understand this is because on 1 hand my pc has a ht link of 1000mhz and will only run 800mhz ddr2 and not 1066 ? apparently, yet my friend has a 800mhz fsb and runs 1066mhz ddr3 ram.

No! HT link and memory speed have nothing in common. Your HT 'limit' is 2000Mhz. Think of this as a potential band width, rather than a speed. Whatever overclock you decide on, just choose a HT multiplier than gets it as close to 2000 without going over. Don'y worry if this results in you ending up with less than the full 2000Mhz. On the old Athlon 64 socket 939 (which had a HT limit of 1000) a website ran loads of benchmarks with it @200Mhz and the difference was between nothing and about 2%, so an overclock of any amount was for greater than a HT loss of any amount.

If you didn't already know the 2000Mhz HT will be actually FSB x10. So say you had an overclock that used an FSB of 230, you would use a HT link of x8 giving 1840Mhz. That's fine.

well right now my Htlink speed is 1005.0mhz
i have a 200.3ish bus speed and a 5x ht speed multiplier, so your saying if i could i would be able to 200 x 10 and have 2ghz htlink? or do motherboards usually only support 1/2 ghz htlinks for a reason, usually when i go over 1.2ghz htlink i get bsod's

1000 will be default (x2) there's no reason to change this unless you are overclocking.

fair enough, so what 'if possible' would need overclocking to get my board to support ddr2 1066mhz ram,
currently my speeds are:
bus: 200mhz
ht: 1000mhz
mem: 800mhz
cpu voltage: 1.4v
mem voltage: 1.95v
?
