memory confusion...

Hi

My motherboard is an Asus M4A77
as far as I know this is a DDR2 board

on the original box I have its says DDR3 OC 1800MHz on the front
its not a sticker, its actually printed on the box,

I know DDR2 and DDR3 are both 240 pin and will fit in each others slots but i'm pretty sure DDR2 will only work with DDR2 slots and the same with DDR3

I have 2 channels (blue and black slots) which i'm sure are both DDR2 as my RAM works in both sets,

the board has DDR2 OC 1200 printed next to the slots.

so is the fact the box says it supports DDR3 a mistake?

DDR2 and DDR3 are not electrically compatible, nor will they fit in each others slots as the notches are in different places.

Just looked at your motherboard specs on-line and can't see anything saying saying it supports DDR3. So if the box does say DDR3 then yes, it's wrong.



Almost at 250 now too.

oh I thought DDR2 and 3 fit in each others slots but didn't work, ah well lol

wonder if I can kick off with Asus for selling me something that wasn't what it said it was, (i knew it was DDR2 anyway cos I reviewed it prior to purchase, not the point though)

If i'm not mistaken - DDR2 and DDR3 sticks are the same size and have the same number of pins, but the notches are in different places - so you physically can't put a DDR3 module in a DDR2 slot (and vice versa).

As for complaining to ASUS, it really depends whether you bought it expecting it to run DDR3 due to information provided on the retailers or ASUS website. However, if the only place where it mentions DDR3 is the box then they can just argue that it is a printing error and you had already bought the motherboard and accepted it was DDR2 before you saw the box.

Yup DDR2 only . . . ASUS M4A77

But you bought it knowing it was a AM2+ DDR2 board right, you have read reviews on the item before you purchased it etc . . .

Why on earth would you try and turn a random print mistake on a box to your own advantage? . . . really nothing to "kick off" about?
