Probably worth buying a cheap memory foam topper just to see whether you like it before splashing out on a whole new memory foam mattress. There's certainly loads of them on the market, especially online.
My sister and her husband have this memory foam mattress topper which they got to help my sister's bad back - she's just about to have an op on her back (slipped disc) -which is causing her quite a bit of pain and she can only lie down or stand as cannot sit at the moment. Anyway, it's quite a firm sort of softness. I think I would prefer one of the other options, such as the nice soft squishy feather mattress topper. I think I'd just like a softer fluffier sleep surface, that wasn't quite as dense as memory foam. I wouldn't like the idea of sinking into something that surrounds you so completely, not allowing any air next to your skin. I'm sure I'd overheat!
Agreed, I got a latex topped pocket sprung mattress last summer, its ace but getting sheets is awkward, its over 300mm deep! Luckily the net helped me find a good linen supplier
