Memory for 1280 * 1024?

I currently have a Geforce 6800 GT, and thinking of upgrading to a 7900 GS 256 MB (the £99 special deal).

I'm only interested in running at 1280 * 1024 resolution. Is the amount of RAM on the card important for this? That is, does more RAM mean you can run at higher a res? (In which case I do not need to look at 512 MB cards).

How much of a performance improvement will I get over my 6800GT?

Cheers

If you can stretch your budget a bit further go for an X1800XT. The memory on a card doesn't necesarrily limit the resolution you can game at.

I may be wrong here but Im sure I remember reading something about the 7900 and a lot of them seem to be having problems.

My 256MB X1800XT is unbelieveable compared to my old 6800GT and runs everything out 1280x1024 in max settings. You might want to also upgrade to 2GB ram as newer games seem to like this in order to run smoothly.

A 7600 GT is faster than a 6800 Ultra so the 7900GS will be a nice boost. And for the money is a steal.

They overclock fantastically too.

At that res 256MB is fine.

Thanks.

I've been put off the X1800XT by reports of noisy fans.

The rest of the upgrade will include practically everything, new mobo, CPU, RAM (2GB), case, PSU, HDD etc. £99 is so cheap that I can think about upgrading later for DX10.

I need to upgrade now as I've knackered my HDD by recycling the power too quickly
