Memory for GA-G41M-ES2L

Hi guys

I have this pretty old mobo that I did buy from here a couple of months back before it went out of stock and was stopped selling.

I am running it with 4gb ddr2 800. The memory support lists states it can take:

Model Name: G41M-ES2L DDR2 1300 ( downgrade to DDR2 800 )

What does the downgrade to 800mhz mean? It will only run at that speed on this mobo?

Also it only lists the 1gb version by team. So does that mean I could only have 2gb max if I use 1300 ram? Link to mobo:

So rather long story short, can I run the 1300 ddr2 with 2gb per stick to get back to 4gb? I want to overclock my Q6600 just past 3.0ghz and I am limited by the 800mhz ram I have right now.

If I need to change the mobo, does anyone have any ideas on a model to run a 775 chip that will support faster ram then 800?

800MHz ram will take a Q6600 to 3.6GHz without any memory overclocking.

Thanks for the reply, I guess it is the mobo then, If I want to get past 3.0ghz it wants to overclock the ram to over 1000, which then makes the machine unstable.

Q6600 has default fsb of 266MHz (with a 9x multiplier) so it only needs DDR2-533.

At 3.0GHz the fsb is only up 333MHz so would need DDR-667, and DDR-800 will take you all the way to 3.6GHz (400MHz x 9).

You’re not trying to get past 3.0GHz with the multiplier locked down to 6x are you?

Thanks for the reply. No I have it set to 9x. Ram is 1:1, without looking its 600 something for 3.0 ghz.

When I try to go above 3.0ghz the machine just wont post. I have tried changing voltage and everything. I am not sure why I cant get a post past 3.0ghz.

my kids had this mobo before, its not great for overclocking, i struggled to get their old E3300 past 3.1ghz on it, a q6600 is a lot more power hungry.

Also you can change the ram speed in the bios using the memory divider, it doesn't have to be at 1:1

I used to have that mobo, utter harbage for overclocking. Wouldn't take my E6400 past 2.72GHz no matter what.

My Asus board clocks my Q6600 without even breaking a sweat

Ah maybe the mobo then.

Hard to find these 775 socket boards, would someone mind telling me a cheap model number I can get that will get me past 3.0ghz? I don't care if it reaches 3.6 but I would like to have at least 3.4ghz. It is a go stepping.

Does it need to be micro-ATX or can it be ATX?

Look out for the P45 chipset, they're great overclockers. Buy second hand also, the new stuff for sale is very expensive now.

Hi

I would much prefer micro-ATX if possible. I have looked and seen lots of different boards, hard to know if they are actually any good. Would love to have advice on a model number of someone who has done this in the past.
