what's the best memory for this combination? Should i be looking at 1066 or 800 ?

I was thinking about going for 4 even though it wouldn't all be available under vista 32bit

Umm, this is really rough theory, but their is like two main companies that make the basic ram and that is Micron and some other company and in most of the G.Skill ram sticks they use the Mircon chips and there on the list.
However, im not entirly sure and could/probaly/most likly be wrong :P, i would wait for better advice.
Also those on the list are known compatible components, the G.Skill should work straightaway only thing might be need is to check things in the BIOS like voltage and timings.

Will be used if ya have SP1.

Not to my knowledge it won't (on Vista 32bit), my understanding is that having SP1 installed will allow all 4GBs to show up in Vista, but you still need Vista 64bit for ALL 4GBs to be physically used by the OS....

I'm sure if this is not the case, some kind soul will correct me...

you're right. it will show 4gb in system properties but that is all. it's purely cosmetic.

as for the OP, i have the ocz 2x2gb gold kit (well 2 of them actually :p) running in my ds3l with a q6600. no problems. :)

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-086-OC

had to set the voltage manually to 2.1v (i was recommended to do this when speccing my rig - it still posts at the default voltage so it's not a problem)

silly question time...

if the fsb of the q6600 is 1066 do you not need to match that with the ram? i.e. pc8500 as opposed to pc6400 ?

Yip. PC2-6400 isn't needed til the Q6600 is running on a 1600mhz FSB (400mhz real).

is that something to do with it being a quad core? where does the multiplier come into it?

Nah Intel 'quad-pump' their FSB's. It's pretty much just a marketing gimmick to go against AMD's HyperTransport link (which is currently at 2000mhz).

But in reality (as far as we are concerned) Intels 1066mhz FSB runs at 266mhz, and their 1333mhz FSB chips run at 333mhz.

The multiplier is just used to set the final speed of the chip.
