I need to get somememory for one of my PC's (replacing what I have in there). Knowing next to nothing about it I want to make sure I get the right stuff.

The motherboard is a Gigabyte X58A-UD3R with Intel X58 chipset.

So I'm looking for 16GB (or more but not less), and ideally spending about £150 give or take but want some decent stuff.

Thanks in advance for the help :)

Got the same mobo as you, have a look at the kingston hyperx genesis kits. I have the 6 gb kit, but they do 12 and 24gb kits. Compatible with gigabyte board according to website.

Or possibly 2 of these and save £10:

Kingston HyperX Genesis 12GB (3x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Triple Channel

Do you have a suitable version of Windows?

These are the upper RAM limits for the different editions of 64 bit Windows 7:

•Starter: 8GB
•Home Basic: 8GB
•Home Premium: 16GB
•Professional: 192GB
•Enterprise: 192GB
•Ultimate: 192GB

Edit:

Or you could also try three 2x4GB kits at even less cost.

Thanks for the replies so far all. At the moment I have 6GB of Patriot Memory.. which according to CPU-Z is : PC3-8500F (1600EL Series) and looking through the windows of the PC I see that it's 3 sticks so 3 x 2 GB.

I'm actually using Windows 7 Home Premium and didn't realise that there was a max memory for that so thanks for that info. I think I'll have to but the Pro Version at some stage on this basis so I'll have to think whether I order it with the memory as I was thinking of doing a fresh install anyway so now would be a good time.

I have a 3*2Gb triple channel kit with one failed stick, i opted to just buy 2*4Gb hyperx grey when i it Was on offer a few months back, think it was £32.
I never have got round to RMAing the other memory.
I haven't noticed any difference ongoing from triple channel to dual channel.

I have a i7 940 in a Asus Maximus Extreme 2 x58, with the same 6gb (3x2gb) Patriot RAM mentioned earlier.

Which RAM would be a good upgrade to at least 8gb ?? Cost isnt an issue ;)

Why 8gb, that means you won't be using triple channel. Kingston hyperx genesis 1600mhz or corsair vengance 1600mhz in a 6gb kit.

I didnt think there would be a lot of real world difference between dual and triple channel RAM

So just asking the best kit for me above 8gb ?

not necessarily a kit, will do just fine with 3 sets of dual kit.
I put 6 sets of 2x4gb kit into sr-2 (dual s1366). work just fine. didn't even check the recommended memory manual. :p
