I know next to nothing about overclocking as my old CPU was a Barton 3000+ which was notoriously bad for overclocking so I didn't bother :p

I have now invested in a new PC with a Q9650 processor which is supposed to be quite good for overclocking and I would like to give it a try.

However the one thing that puts me off is that my RAM is only rated for 800 Mhz (400 Mhz DDR) and increasing the CPU clock rate will also push up the memory frequency above this threshold and I'm wondering if it would burn out the RAM or damage it

Here's the memory that is currently in my PC:

I was thinking of buying this 1066 Mhz memory from OcUK but haven't a clue if it would be compatible with my motherboard

Any advice anyone?

Thanks :)

The Q9650 has a 9* multiplier.

With the PC6400 memory which you have you'll be able to overclock the cpu up to 3.6GHz (9*400) without even stressing the memory (as long as you run the memory:fsb ratio at 1:1).

Your RAM may overclock a little above that but if you're looking to clock that CPU further then I'd suggest getting some PC8500 RAM.

Thanks for the advice :)

A 600 Mhz overclock would do me as I'm only running on standard air HSF cooling and don't want to go down the water cooling route which I would probably have to get more of an overclock from my Q9650!

Now been a newb to overclocking I just have to work out how to do the above :o

Increasing the CPU clock frequency can't be the right way as I tried that the other day and I realised shortly afterwards that my RAM frequency was at 820 Mhz after my PC crashed (probably because Melco isn't a quality brand - I used to use Kingston RAM in my old PC)

I've tried to do the above but it doesn't work as the PC just crashes :(

Do you know if the PC8500 RAM runs at a slower speed than it's designed to run at i.e. 1066 Mhz

Say if by overclocking my CPU, I only manage to push the RAM to 900 Mhz - would this be okay

Does anyone know if this RAM is compatible with my Foxconn G31MX series motherboard - it's not a high end mobo :(

I would like to know before the special offer is withdrawn as £40 for 4 GB is good value for money especially if it enables me to overclock my RAM :D
