Memory help needed

I have often wondered but never really give it much thought what some numbers mean on memory modules, the ones i mean are like 6-6-6-18 for example.

I have seen these in bios too, is it something to do with dram timing and do the numbers in bios need altering to be the same as on the memory modules because if that's the case mine aint.

EDIT i forgot to mention that in bios the auto detect figures don't match what is on the memory modules.

Yes they are the memory timings, in order for your RAM to run stable, the values in BIOs should be equal to or higher than those printed on the modules, if theyre lower this means you have tightened the timings which is better performance but as with all forms of OCing can lead to instability

Theres an indepth explanation of memory here, which is actually Anandtechs review of the Asus Rampage Formula mobo, but they go into a lot of detail about memory, just ignore the specifics to do with the board, the general principles still apply
