Memory installation problem

Hi first time on the forums as I'm looking for some help.

I have a Gigabyte X581-ud3r rev2.0 with 6GB (3x2GB) of Corsair XMS3 installed. I have purchased another 6GB of exactly the same memory but when it is installed the PC refuses to boot.

This is the second batch of memory I have had. The first batch had a bad stick as I could boot with 10GB but it refused to boot with the 3rd one installed. This time I cant get it to boot with ANY extra RAM installed.

This is where I'm puzzled though: I replaced one of the original sticks with a new one, and hey presto PC boots normally. The original memory is in slots 1-3-5 (white slots) but as it was booting with 10GB less than a week ago I can only assume the mobo is fine, and its a setting somewhere but I do not know what I need to look for

Im posting here as the original system was an overclockers Ulitma Viper (i7 950 oc'ed to 4Ghz) and I dont know if it is the overclocked settings in bios for the ram that is an issue.

Id be grateful of any advice.

Hi there,

Have you tried to boot with just the new memory?

If that's works fine then its worth checking the newer stuff works at the same voltage and timings as your current memory.

Hi MeatLoaf.

Thanks for the response.

I took your advise and booted up with just the new memory installed in slots 1-3-6, and it worked fine. So I then placed the old memory in adding them one at a time and booting after each one is added. Now the PC boots with no issues, and correctly displays 12GB.

Dont know why that worked, but it did :)

Good that you sorted it, but that is very odd. Maybe one of the sticks wernt connected properly?

Also, I was under the impression that when the system performs POST, it checks only the first 64k of memory, or a small amount of memory anyway.
