memory issues, all of a sudden, with vista 64

Hi all,

I've had my system running for about a year (see sig), though about 2 months ago changed from xp 32 to vista 64. Generally an improvement :) Though in the last week, it started having serious issues, sometimes just black screen and other times bluescreening, after being running for anything from 15 minutes to 4 hours. The bluescreen errors were generally MEMORY_MANAGEMENT or ecache.sys, which I understand is a module that caches stuff to memory.

I have 4 x 1G memory sticks so I've tried with 2 and it's more stable (though never perfect). I've also turned off my overclock, though the memory was never overclocked or overvolted. Booting to XP, it doesn't have this problem. I'm guessing it's either the RAM or the motherboard, though I've tried both sets of 2 1G sticks in individually and the problem occurs with both. With all 4 in, it's incredibly unstable.

Has anyone else come across this before? Any idea what's causing it, or how to mitigate it, and why it seems vista specific?

Thanks in advance :)

Check your RAM voltages are set to the same as the manufacturers Spec for the ram.

Also when you tested the two sticks at a time, did you use the first 2 ports? I've found that sometimes dust can build up on the contacts, try using the other 2 ports. Although doesnt explain why its fine in XP.

Have you tried reinstalling Vista?

Yeah the motherboard defaults the ram voltage a bit low so I upped it, didn't make a difference.

I think it's the RAM as I am now running on two sticks and it seems stable, maybe I just picked the right combination. I ordered 2 x 2G from OcUK that should arrive wednesday. If they dont work I'll just replace the motherboard as well.
