Memory physical sizes

Is laptop memory usually about half the size of desktop memory?

I recently got a 256mb module for my packard bell laptop and its half the size of desktop. All the specifications are the same as the module already inside the laptop (DDR333, PC2700) except it doesnt fit in.

The laptop module i already have is the same size as a normal RAM stick.

Laptop SODIMMS are about half the length, but twice the width of desktop sticks..

strange. The module i received is the same with as normal ram, just half the size (and the gap bit is in a different place obviously)
