Hi All

Need some help picking RAM for my new setup.

The setup will be:

Intel Core 2 Quadro Extreme Edition QX6700 "LGA775 Kentsfield" 2.66GHz
BFG nForce 680 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) X2 SLI
BFG 1000W UK/PFC Approved PSU

I don't think i will be overclocking because i don't usually i just get what i can afford at the time although if you have read some of my other resent posts i would like to... :o

I would like to get 4GIG of ram, i normally get corsair so really i would just like some suggestions. and i don't wont to rule out overclocking altogether.

I have been looking at the XMS2 6400 CAS 4 and the G-Skill because its on offer... i am guessing these both have the EPP thing for boosting SLI?

Thanks

Don't think both kits support EPP.

It has nothing to do with SLI anyway, all it does is storing additional info on the SPD chip so it can better inform BIOS of the RAM settings at various clock speeds - manually adjusting the timings in BIOS will achieve the same result, if not better.

I think a decent 2Gb PC6400 kit like the OCZ, Geil, and G.Skill that are on this week only will do just fine. Get 2 for 4Gb, or if you have money to splash you can check out the Kingston HyperX 2x2Gb Kit.

Without wanting to start a war here, big chunks of that system are a total waste of money. Any E6x00 series processor will easily overclock to 2.66GHz and the NVidia 650i class motherboards are now actually benchmarking faster than the 680i boards.

Just one 8800GTX will give you as much performance as you require unless you have a massive display and you're actually paying the top-of-the-range premium for quite old components (the new top end (89x0 series) graphics cards will be out soon, Intel are set to drop the prices of all their processors in April or May and DDR2 RAM prices are forecast to be £40/Gb for PC6400 RAM by the summer.

Unless you have to buy it now, wait. If you have to buy now, spend £1000 less and spend the other £1000 in the summer on upgrades.

And the RAM you want is the Crucial Ballistix PC5300 Cas3 stuff at £130/2Gb kit.

I can see your point WJA96 the thing with this upgrade is its like a one of for at least 18 months, because i wont have this sort of money again for a while. I cant actually get the system for another 3 weeks anyways so i might wait for the Intel price drops.

Regarding the SLi i had SLI'd 7800GTXs and it was nice and because i cant upgrade again for a while i thought getting it again will keep me sweet for crysis C&C and up and coming DX10 games. (This will be on a 2405)

and about the Core 2 Quadro, the boat is still out on that one i would like to get an E6600 and overclock it but i have never really done it :o. Another person has recommended i just get 1 GTX, 2GIG Cell Shock RAM, and a e6600 and water cooling and OC and save money and enter the real enthusiast world but i am not sure (To Scared lol)

Thanks
