Memory Prices and If They Will Increase ??

Hi guys, im thinking of getting 4GB since its so cheap (Geil 2GB x 2 for £70) but wondered if now was the best time to buy or if i can save up a little more and wait...or will the prices not get any lower or will they be stable at these prices etc.

Any ideas or suggestions ?

I cant see them getting any lower really. Even if they did, it would be by a tiny amount. When they stop making DDR2 and move fully to DDR3 i would expect the prices to go up! This happend with SD-RAM and with DDR1. I dont think you would lose anything in buying it now.
 
We're more or less at give away pricing right now.
Once production switches to DDR3 then you may see a slight increase in prices but that is quite a way off.
Sure DDR3 is being produced right now, but most people are on DDR2 now and plan on being so even in a years time.

You could wait forever with regards hardware prices - they nearly always continue to fall until the point where they are no longer made at which point there is a period of time when prices increase (due to rarity) followed by it tailing off again.

I don't think you would save much by holding off on your purchase.
 
the information i have is that it is not going to drop much lower...but business will start pulling out of the DRAM business as the prices are too low and supply too high...

so in the new year it may rise, but dont be surprised if you see, £8 2GB USB Sticks, and 1GB DDR2 sticks for £15~
 
If your going to buy then this time is best to buy. I can't see the prices going much lower than it is otherwise you might as well give it away in a cracker for christmas. 4GB for £70 is a bargin.
 
thanks, jsut gone to buy 2 kits and got a "Your authentication could not be completed because of a system error. If this happens consistently, please contact your CSR" error right at the end, and keep getting it >.<
 
Why do people constantly asy i cant see them going much lower? Yeah we all said that 8 months ago and they are half price now. Its rediculas. Pc hardware doesn't go up in price over time.

The reason for the quick drop is serposidly excess of ram being made and not being bought enough but the prices wont hike up 10 quid next year. I know they do go up and down a bit but its by 5 quid tops and usualy only 1 or 2 quid. General trend is to go down.

I've got no insider information, but having been in the industry for 15 years and watching the trends in pricing on all computer hardware you kind of get an idea when prices have indeed hit rock bottom.
Also working for a company that buys in DDR & DDR2 "chips" rather than memory modules you can also see when prices really are as low as they are going to go.
We may see a few more pounds shaved off but really prices are not going to go a lot lower than where they are now.
 
The only way prices will drop significantly further is if a budget manufacturer or two decide to clean up the market before it collapses. OcUk's own unbranded set isn't borthering to compete yet, but they might slash prices once they realise they are holding expensive and undesireable modules and everyone else is moving to DDR3 or getting cheap second hand DDR2.

ive got insider information. what i said above is information i recieved yesterday from one of the worlds biggest dram manufacturers...

Totally agree, About this time last year there was post from gibbo saying "buy your ram now, 2 x 1gig cant get any cheaper" (about £100 i think).

Why would they say its going to get cheaper? Why would they want it to get cheaper?

Further more everything always decreasees in price. Name me some hardware which is popular and hasn't decreased in price? I say popular because things like NIC cards stay high because no one buys them, even so they ahve still come down in price.

Motherboards, im sure they are the only piece of hardware that has risen in price.
Having said that, the best performing GFX cards have always entered at about £400 so £ per unit of performance is better but the top stuff is probably as expensive as it was.
Then again, less than £20 for a superb duel layer DVD burner is great value but a PS3 is no cheaper than a PS2 or PS1 on their respective releases.

they say its going to get cheaper due to excess supply... so lower prices to clear the stock...

they dont want it to get cheaper, but due to volumes produced it will have to for the reason above.

thats why i said next year maybe a few vendors will pull out, due to low ASP's etc. but then price will rise a little but its not going to go up like before.

but also, think about it, DDR2 isnt going to be that popular, for that long, because of DDR3...
