Memory Prices Rising Steeply (I think)

Couldn't resist the corsair offer either - now just need a CPU / MB / Cooler! I was ever so close to getting the 2500k on offer too

I will have to think of some plausible reasons why I MUST upgrade the computer, otherwise I will have some disapproving looks from the wife when I click 'buy' :D

haha I'm in the exact same boat!

Talking about the Corsair RAM on T.W.O...

Corsair Vengeance Blue 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual/Quad Channel Kit (CMZ16GX3M4A1600C9B) - £95.99

vs

Corsair Vengeance Blue 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B) - £43.99

Am I missing something here? (Buy 2, get 2 more at a worse price?) - just need to decide whether to get 4x4Gb or 6x6Gb...

i dont really understand this either! the only thing i can make from it is maybe the price dropped for the 8gb kit and that with the 16gb kit the ram is matched from the same batch?

I currently have 4GB RAM mainly for gaming http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-203-CS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1517

But having seen the cheap price i was thinking of getting 8GB.

Looking at some i was wondering what is the difference between :
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-299-CS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1517

and

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-290-CS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1517

I admit im a noob at memory and i dont OC it, but i just cant see any difference other than the naming.

The Vengence model has the large heat spreader compared to the low-profile XMS3, so if you have a huge CPU cooler then that may cause issues in getting to fit underneath it.

As far as other specifics go, I'm sure the Vengence model runs at a slightly lower voltage compared to the XMS3 so that may make it run a little cooler (plus the heat spreader helping). That voltage may help its potential for overclocking it, although I'm not entirely sure about that, someone else round here may be more knowledgable about that.

But as you say you don't overclock, unless you benchmark them to the extreme then you will see no difference in performance between them. I would just go with whichever one you like the look of, seeing as they're both currently the same price, probably the only other factor :)

Corsair do a LP (low profile) version of the Vengence specifically for those with big CPU coolers, however I don't think OcUK stock them.

4GB

8GB

I assume the 8GB is low profile even though it doesn't say it in the description for some reason.

Yeah I presume it's low profile, although that is the low voltage stuff (1.35v) and more expensive than the normal 1.5v vengence (lp) which can be had from elsewhere for around the 40 quid mark.

I think the retail price drags the indutry price by a month or so, therefore that rise you can see on the chart will not be in the retail channel yet - but will be very soon...
