Hi,

Ive got a problem with my new PC, now that ive added some more ram.

Basically i just added another 2 sticks of Corsair XMS2 4GB DDR2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX (2x2GB) to take the system up to 8gb. The problem is im getting a lot of crashes in games now. Is the memory likely to be faulty?

My Windows Vista 64bit system spec:

Intel Core2 q9550
Nvidia Geforce GTX 285
Asus P5q deluxe motherboard
4gb memory (Corsair XMS2 DDR2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX (2x2GB))
creative SB X-fi

thanks in advance

EDIT: Having 3 sticks in, rather than 4, seems to be fine(with either of the 2 new sticks) Does the P5q motherboard have issues with this amount of memory?

Up the Northbridge voltage a notch or two (MCH Voltage) and see how you get on.
If that fails test the memory with Mem-Test.

Thanks for the reply mate. I just tried to update my bios, the verification failed and i came close to soiling myself (never use the Asus bios updater its bad!), rebooted and i got a black screen, soiled myself, i cleared the cmos and managed to use EZ flash to reapply the latest bios update and im now up and running and so far so good, my pc now seems more stable. If i hit any problems ill try your suggestion.

Im now off to clear up ;)

no not yet. ill have to try it tomorrow now. If you have other things i can try feel free to post here and ill try them too.

As your running 4 memory sticks, which puts a bit more strain on the memory controller, its often neccesary to raise the NB voltage to compensate for this. Also make sure the ram voltage and timings are set to the manufacturers reccomended settings.

Hi guys, im pretty sure one of the sticks is faulty(i wanted to eliminate this possiblity first). I tried both new sticks on there own and while one allowed me to get into windows fine and do a successfull memtest, the other caused all kinds of crashes as soon as windows tried to load.

Time for an RMA i guess :(
