Rightio,

Quick questions regarding laptop memory modules, I have the dell 15z on order and I was wondering if it will be possilbe to swap out the current 2x4gig sticks of memory in the PC to 2x8gig without too much hassle? Or is there a difference in the type of memory laptops use compared to desktop (been a while since I've looked at laptops)

Any help on this would be rewarded with an eCookie :)

Cheers,

KaHn

I just put this in a xps 15 with no problems

corsair-8gb-2x4gb-ddr3-1333mhz-laptop

from a popular computer webshop starting with e

I'm sure if you can find 2x 8gb sticks it'll be the same just check on what the maximum the board can take (specs will be on dells site).

I don't really know what you'd want 16gb for in that spec of system tho.

I want to use the laptop for work stuff, which uses a lot of ram.

Cheers for the help tho I'll have a look through the website later.

/edit :- looks like 400 quid for the 16gb kit so think I'll leave it for now :)

no problem, what program are you using out of interest?

A number of programs, mainly the following.

Ansys/Abaqus FEA for both static and nonlinear analysis.
Solidworks CAD
Inventor CAD
and AutoCAD.

The memory is mostly for Ansys as it will allow a much faster simulation if it can run "in core" which is based how much RAM you have.

ah cool thought it'd be cad based... I was going to go for 16gb but I couldnt justify it enough as it'd mean I'd have also justified ssd ad dual drives.

I'm mainly rendering video and motion graphics

Ah cool, I'm hoping the i7 will help with the running time as I'm currently doing the it on a Q6600.

This is more for running things on the move and I'll be looking at a analysis machine in a couple months to replace the q6600 and try and get that up to 24gig/32gig ram depending on cost.

your doing pretty much exactly what I've done apart from I went for an i5 to keep cost down as I only use the laptop maybe 100 days of the year... even the i5 is noticeably faster than the q6600 i had
