Hi all,

a friend of mine has this montherboard

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Overview.aspx?ProductID=1958

he's has this memory installed:

I'm guessing that the ram has been running at 333mhz insted of 400mhz he wants to get the best memory he can for his system as he uses it for viedo editing etc.

He's asked me if he buy's another 1 gig stick of the ram he currently has would he get the full 400mhz out of the ram?

if this doesn't work can someone spec the max quallity + fastest he can use.

Thanks in advance

He won't get 400mhz as the motherboard doesn't support more than two sides of RAM@400mhz.

IE you can have two single sided DIMMs@400Mhz, but two double sided will not go above 333Mhz.

It also looks like it doesn't support unmatched side-config - IE two double-sided DIMMs plus one single sided DIMM - at least it's not a 'supported' configuration. See here:

Because of CPU limitations, if you want to install DDR400 memory modules in your system, please install either one double-sided or two single-sided DDR400 memory modules. The DDR400 speed will drop down to DDR333 if you install two double-sided or three single-sided DDR400 memory modules.
If he wants the best even performance, I'd suggest sourcing another OCZ module of the same sort, or removing the OCZ stuff and putting in three of these:

If he is serious about requiring the performance though, spending £400 on a system that will tear his current kit to pieces - CPUs and RAM have come leaps and bounds since the days of Socket 754 - is a top idea.

£400 can get you a 2.8Ghz phenom II system with 8gb of RAM - just add HDD, keyboard, monitor and mouse - I'm looking at one beside me right now, operating as a Xen VM Server. Stonking grunt has never been so accessable that I can remember, and a Phenom II will last pretty well until the true next-get platforms come out...
