No it doesn't but it's preferable. The more differences there are between modules the more likely you'll run into compatibility issues obviously. In extreme cases you might need to run all your modules below stated speed and above standard voltage and you'll still might get errors in memtest. You'll most likely need to lower your overclock as well if you have any.
