ok so here is what i am dealing with: http://uk.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_775/P5KC/

I have 4 sticks - 2 kingston(2x2gb) 2 ocz(2x1gb)

I know that IF you are going to mix memory then its best to have the same sticks in the same channel.
So reading this passage from the manual (ddr2 800mhz):

A - Supports one module inserted into either slot, in Single-channel memory configuration.
B - Supports two modules inserted into either the yellow slots or the black slots as one pair of Dualchannel
memory configuration.
C - Supports four modules inserted into both the yellow slots and the black slots as two pairs of Dualchannel
memory configuration.

Looking at option B
means that 1 black/yellow is one channel and the other black/yellow is anohter hence with two sticks you woud use both black or yellow to get dual channel.

However: this means that if i want both kingston in the same channel 1 stick goes in black and one goes in yellow (and the same for the ocz) BUT there are two was this can be done, so which way ensures they are on the same channel?

ignoring the DDR3 slots on this board should I ...

Yellow- black - Yellow - Black
OCZ - OCZ - Kingston- Kingston
or
OCZ - Kingston - Kingston - OCZ

(And then vice versa each combination which wouldnt change anything)

currently have it at my first choice but works both ways...

THanks
:D

I thought it was the opposite and that you should have the same sticks operating as a dual channel pair.

In this case you'd put two identical sticks in the yellow slots and two identical sticks in the blacks slots.

Maybe I'm wrong?

Then you would have 2 diffrent brands and timings running on the same channel, right?

so i read - the best thing is to have a channel running with the same RAM sticks.

thanks

Fitting it my way then two identical sticks are being used together as a dual pair.

Fitting it your way then you're trying to use non-identical sticks as a dual channel pair.

My way sounds better.

Ok, Well i have done it my way and CPU-Z tells me it is running in dual.

Again from what i know/read you should have the same brand in one channel.

ie.
Channel A = OCZ
Channel B = Kingston

therefore not mixing brands within a channel.

Cpu-z says they are both running all the same latency and voltage but i assume it has done that automatically.

There are a few threads around the web on the confusion of this.
although it is using dual channel now i fear that i may not gain the most
as channel A = 2gb and channel B = 4gb

Perhaps i shall mix them across channels as you have said so i gain 3gb per channel as they are running at the same latency and then check cpu-z again.

thanks

infact i will do it now. brb.

Still Dual: I will leave it this way so ideally its 3gb per channel.
