Since I bought my last cpu and board, P4 prescott Skt 478, I haven't been following PC hardware at all really since my PC has been fast enough for every game I've thrown at it for the last 2 years. I'm now needing to upgrade to switch to PCI-Express, and finding I know bugger all about the stuff I'm going to buy.
My question is about DDR2 - is there a link between CPU FSB and memory speed (with either Core 2 Duo or A64 skt 939)? For instance to get my Prescott to run at 800 Mhz FSB you need 200 MHz ram (DDR400). Let's say I was going to get a Core 2 E6300 - is there any particular speed of DDR2 I would need?
Let's say I wanted to still be able to use the same ram 18 months later when I upgraded to say a E6700 - what DDR2 would I need to be buying now? Can I just get the far cheaper DDR2-667/PC2-5300?
Thanks in advance
