I have just odered a Sony HX5v superzoom compact and now need to get a memory card for it. Reading the specs on the Sony site it seems you can use either Sony Memory Stick or SDHC cards:-----

Recording Media
Memory Stick™ Duo(still only), Memory Stick PRO Duo™(Mark2 only for movie). Memory Stick PRO Duo™ High Speed (Still only and no Speed Advantage), Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo™ (No Speed Advantage),

Recording Media II
SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Card (Class 4 or Higher for movie), internal memory (45MB)

Is one any better than the other (interms of shot to shot speed/ reviewing pictures on the screen etc)? SDHC comes in various speed Class 4, 6 10 etc and seem generally much cheaper. I dont have any preferance in terms of existing devices.

Any thoughts on what 8 or 16Gb card to get? Or does it make no difference and should I go for the cheapest.

The Sony Pro Duo mkII cards are very reliable. I've shot many gigabytes of HD video and mine's never failed me. That said, as you pointed out, they are quite expensive compared to similar size/performance SDHC cards. If you get a higher class SDHC card you should be on par with the pro duo mk2. As for buying a good brand, I've never had problems with SanDisk products.

Also as a side note; Try and buy from a reputable retailer. I bought a cheap one on ebay and it was a fake, which wasn't up to recording video, or much else really.
