In the past i've always used a bootable memtest x86 CD to do memory testing, what do people use these days in for example sandy bridge systems?

I tried all 3 options available on memtest but no matter what i do i couldn't get it to start up on my mates PC, it just instantly rebooted the PC on each selection, luckily im 90% sure it's a driver issue shes having but i'd quite like to do a full memory test though just incase, what can i use for this?

Hmm, I came here with a memtest question, but not this one.

But to attempt to answer your question - I'm playing with memtest86 off a usb key and it's actually very easy. You can grab a little installer of their site (hotlink) or get UBCD and run a little script to format/install to usb.

(Reading again this probably won't work if the CD doesn't :o )

HCI do a bootable disk image. It comes as part of MemTest Deluxe but costs about £10 to download. Worth every penny though - I find it is much better than MemTest86+ at finding issues and I really wouldn't use anything else to verify RAM/IMC stability these days. Helped me no end in ridding my system of BSODs and random file corruption.

That said, the best of all test is to boot Windows and run multiple instances of HCI MemTest Pro. That way you can make use of multiple cores to maximise testing throughput. Since I have a hex core CPU and 8GB, I run 6 instances with 1024MB each and leave it for at least 12 hours. 24hours is ideal. You can then be sure the RAM sub-system is all ok after that.
