Memory timings

Hi thanks for looking.

I'm currently trying to get my corsair vengeance rgb pro 3600 to work properly.

I know with my ryzen 7 2700x 3600 is impossible and as the only auto config in d.o.c.p is 3600 I'm having to imput the timings manually to run at 3400mhz.

Currently they are 17,17,17,39 which is what corsair recommended for that speed. The system is a lot more stable but I'm still getting a lot of memory errors when gaming!

I'm unsure what timing I'm ment to input. In my bios I can change cas, rcd, rp, and ras but corsair also mention rc, faw, rrds, and rrdl which is set on auto. Do I need to change them aswell or leave on auto?

Also I can't change the dram voltage. Corsair recommended 1.35v but it's set to 1.20v and I can't change it.

I forgot to add its a asus rog strix b450f gaming board.

update the bios and see if that fixes your voltage setting - you’ll need to increase it to between 1.35 or 1.45

Thanks for the reply I updated the BIOS the other day. I realised I was trying to input the voltage into the wrong box. Its now set to 1.3500v. Now I've got a new problem! It's strange, after a few mins of gaming it freezes, if I open task manager I can't end the process and if I try to shut down or restart Windows it gets stuck on the shutting down screen. It was like this for 20 mins. So pressed ctrl alt delete and it returns to Windows. Anything that uses Windows explorer won't open but I can still browse the start menu. I left the pc on for a few hours and when I came back to it the Windows clock had froze displaying the time that the game originally froze? Its like Windows has crashed but it hasn't could this be hardware related or maybe software, as Windows updated a few hours prior to this strange happening?

Good guide here, enabled me to get ok timings and speed on my 3200 memory (running 3600 now)

Thanks for the reply. I'll take a look at the guide. The main problem I'm having is this memory only seems to tell the mb what it's settings should be at 2666mhz or 3600mhz nothing in between. I've never really done over clocking.

This may sound like a stupid question but do I need to oc the cpu along with the memory or can the cpu be left at it's base clock?

Leave the CPU alone for now. You will need to use manual so you can pick the speed, not DOCP.

Should be like this....(from your manual), I have a Strix B550, so similar. Then most of the settings you need will be under DRAM Timing control.

Unfortunately tuning memory, if the DOCP doesn't work out the box with your setup, can be time consuming.

I had the same last night when I put previously working timings into my RAM config. Going too low latency results in memory errors and causes apps to crash. Use Mem Test to see if you're getting any.

MemTest: RAM reliability tester for Windows (hcidesign.com)

Run 5 instances at 2gig to put pressure on the RAM. A daily system will want 400% tested with zero errors.

I think that the latest BIOS has worse RAM overclocking but I could be doing something wrong. Use DRAM calculator to work out your safe timings and then go from there.

Thanks for the replies. I've spent hours trying all different timings, settings and voltages. Memory always has lots of errors during testing! I'm upgrading my cpu next week to a 5800x can anyone recommend some reasonably priced fast Memory please that I don't need to over clock?

I already have the corsair vengeance 3600. I didn't know till after I purchased it that my current cpu can't run it at 3600. Bit this kit don't want to run stable at any other speed than 2666mhz! I will upgrade my cpu and mobo and see how this memory works. If still crap I will get the crucial as this has always been the memory of my choice.

Actually scratch that. I've just found a i7 11700k for a bit less and a motherboard for less than its amd equivalent! And looking at benchmarks the i7 has better performance.
