Memory upgrade difficulties

Excuse my ignorance guys but i would like some advice on the following issue.

I currently have a DFI LanParty NF4 SLI-DR (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-011-DF), with 2 x 512MB Geil PC4000 DDR500 CL=2.5-7-4-4 (whatever that means!)

I am desperate to upgrade to 2mb but want to know what is the best way to do this. I would like to keep my existing memory if poss but budget is tight. I don't want to drastically affect the speed of my pc.

Processor is an AMD x2 4400 - i don't mind a little performance drop. Computer is mainly used for 3ds max, photoshop and the odd game of battlefield2.

If i go with 4 sticks will it be a severe drop in performance, if not can anyone recommend what memory i should be looking at.

Again, if i do need to go down the 2 stick road, what memory should i be looking at?
