Hi,

I want to upgrade the memory in my Asus P5B Deluxe mobo. What is the maximum amount recommended, which would allow me to run the RAM in DDR2 mode at 800 MHz? Should I limit myself to 3x2GB?

what do you use your computer for? For most purposes 4GB would be fine. Your board will also take 8GB if you want to put matched pairs in. You should note that the more RAM sticks you have, the less of an overclock you will generally be able to achieve, if that is important to you.

I run numerical simulations on it, crunching quite a lot of data. I will find use for any amount of memory, but wouldn't want to give up on DDR2. I read that Asus P5B Deluxe has problems running 4x2GB in DDR2 mode, is that true?

I don't overclock much, in fact I'm not sure if it is now overclocked at all.

DDR2 is very expensive compared to modern DDR3,

I would sell the 2X1GB kit you have now and buy a second hand matched 2X4GB kit

Remember to fit in "pairs" to keep the dual channel operation of the memory controller.

Would 4x2GB also work in DDR2? It is a much cheaper option.

I aggree :D

UPDATE: I bought 4GB of PC-6400 RAM, inserted it next to my old 2GB pair and... it runs smoothly as PC-6400. Very happy :)
