Memory upgrade for iMac

Short answer; Yes

However, the iMacs are overdue for an update, might want to wait a week.

Long answer: Have fun with the little black bit of plastic.

I worried so much when I got my Alu iMac.

I un-did that lone screw but the flap wouldn't drop down, I had to lay it down flat and get my stanley knife out to try n' "tease" it out.

Popped off in the end, but the sweat was running down my head!

Thanks, I wasn't aware that there may be some new iMacs on the way. MacRumours are speculating that Penryn based iMacs could be seen next Tuesday, continuing Apple's pattern of weekly announcements since Macworld. Will wait a bit longer then.

As for the memory, which one are for the iMacs? The 200 pin or more expensive 240 pin?

I am liking the idea of getting 4gb for £76 when I order my iMac, if it is the 200 pin stuff?!

Go to Crucial's site, they've got a wizard that tells you which RAM is compatible.

Buy from 0Cuk though :D

I would say it depends upon how much update. The MacBook Pro update still uses the same chipset and memory sticks, just dropped the 45nm processor in there.

If they do the same with the iMac then very likely to still use the same memory sticks.

thanks for the replies.. was asking cos I bought 2x2gb for my imac, but when I learned that a new imac was on its way I was able to cancel my newly ordered imac.. now i got this memory sitting on my desk ;p

Hi chaps,

We have ordered the 20" 2ghz iMac today and want to upgrade his from 1GB to 2GB.

Am I ok buying just 1GB or should I buy 2x1GB so we get a matched pair? Is this relevant for Macs?

Cheers

I'd go for a matched pair.

The performance loss from an unmatched pair is negligable, but for the price then you'd be better off buying 2x 1GB or higher.

You decided not to wait then Mark66?

Thanks, will order 2x1GB as you say hardly expensive and I could always try to sell the 1gb stick.

As for waiting, we decided that Dad needed a solution sooner than later and my brother and I are both going up there in a few weekends, so we can get him all set up. The speculation on macrumours is that the new ones will just have the Penryn processors and not really be vastly different/better.

However, I am going to hold out :) I am wanting the 24" 2.4 or 2.8, but am not in any real rush, so may as well wait for the latest release. I just hope it comes soon!!

At least I will be able to play with Dad's one until then :D

I'm going to be installing my 4GB of RAM later this evening :D

Thinking about selling the 1GB stick to someone else, is this what most people do or do they just keep it just in case? :)

Keep it.

You might make a small sale from the original RAM, but then if you ever need to troubleshoot then it's best to test with the official Apple RAM.
