Memory upgrade for P7P55D-E

Hello all.

I bought a pre over clocked system from Overclockers last year with the following specs:

Titan Exodus
  • P7P55D-E
  • i5-760 running @4GHz
  • 4GB Ram
  • HD5850 GPU

I've noticed recently that the price of Memory seems to have dropped considerably and I can pickup 8GB for around £50. It would be good to have more since I use a lot of video/imaging software and a Linux VM running within windows 7. When I bought my system I did ask for a memory upgrade but the chap I dealt with said I would loose my overclock.

If I did go ahead and buy more memory would I need to completely manually redo all of the overclock settings including the CPU? In other words, would the detection of 8GB instead of 4GB memory upset everything or would I just need to re-tweak the memory config settings or optionally, leave it running as default?

If it all goes belly up and I want to re-install the original 4GB pair can I restore my original overclock settings from a 'known good' configuration file or is it a case of writing everything down before I start? Been checking around and I can see that it's possible to backup the BIOS to disk but it's not clear whether the settings will be saved with this nor if I can export and re-import BIOS settings.

Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

To answer your second question first there should be an overclocked profile saved in the BIOS.

If you go to the Tools menu and Asus O.C. Profile you should find a profile saved in there from OcUK so if the worst comes to the worst you can go back to where you started from.

The answer to your first question is it depends.

If OcUK have let the RAM settings on auto then you can probably just whack in the new RAM and it will sort itself out.

If OcUK have set specific settings for the RAM you have now then you'll likely have to tweak them to work. For example the timings might be slightly different and the new DDR3 probably runs at a lower voltage.

If you get 8GB and have any difficulties you can always post here and we'll try and sort it out for you.

Once everything is sorted you can save your own profile in the BIOS for any settings you've changed.

Hi surveyor, and thanks for your response.

I've decided to swap the 2x2GB pair of the Corsair XMS3 I already have
(CMX4GX3M2A1600C9) with the higher capacity 2x4GB pair (CMX8GX3M2A1600C9).

4GB XMS Memory kit for dual channel systems, 1600MHz, 9-9-9-24, 1.65V

Seems like great value.

Given that the memory fundamentally ther same 'I think' I should be able to swap these out without changing anything...... or am I being overly simplistic ?

Cheers

You should be able to plug them straight in as their specs are identical apart from the sticks capacity.

However, you may want to check the voltage that OcUK set for the 4Gb set as they 'may' have undervolted them - e.g. anything between 1.5 and 1.65V.

If your present sticks are running at 1.65V then you shouldn't have any problems - if they're running under (which isn't a problem if stable) and you find that the 8Gb set is unstable then up the voltage to 1.65V (this voltage is not a problem with a 1156 setup)

EDIT: As it's an OcUK pre-clocked system, make sure you have a profile saved before fitting the new memory.
