I have 8GB of RAM currently installed, but for Battlefield 1, I have pretty severe stuttering issues.

This what I have: 4 x 2GB of Corsair XMS3 DDR3 CMX6GX3M3A1333C9

My MB is an ASRock B85M Pro4, CPU is i5-4460, GPU is GTX 970.

Should I get the same RAM again, maybe 2x4GB sticks to get me up to 12 GB RAM?

Or should I just go to 16GB ram (2 x 8GB), if so, what type should I get?

The small ram you have will get you sorted and running the game smoother
But it is slow ram
You will suffer a penalty for this
My advice try it out and see if the lower speed ram impacts your game
I will not personally spend money for a 2X4Gb set
Hold on until black friday and see about deals

nobody will buy 2Gb modules
i gave 4x2Gb modules for 10 pounds
had it for sale for over a month

try out the mixed combination
and see if there is a deal on black fridaiy
it is at the end of the month

I'm in the exact same situation. Have the same RAM and CPU as you, but a 480 4gb.

Is there anything wrong with using 12gb as I never thought of that.

no, nothing wrong with using 12gb at all. I used to run 12gb of vengeance ddr3 for a long time and never had issues.

Just for what its worth I overclocked my CPU few weeks ago and set my ram to 1333mhz and forgot about it. Got major stutters then remembered and set it back to 2133mhz and it was back to being fluid. Big Big difference in how smooth gameplay was but fps average wasnt affected too much. I would be tempted to replace the 8gb with faster ram (I have 16gb though).

went for 24gb myself, not much in it between 16 and 24gb. At least it'll never run out of memory till the point the machine needs to be replaced. Might as well get as much use, and have availability of the ram now than leaving it become obselete.

Thanks for the advice folks, I've order 2x8GB sticks of 1600MHz Patriot RAM, I can give 4GB of my old RAM to my son so he can upgrade to 12GB. My MB is limited to DDR3 1600 in any case, time for an upgrade soon I guess.
