Our server needs more memory, its a poweredge 2800.

Crucial suggest 2GB kit (1GBx2)
CT490899 DDR2 PC2-4200 • CL=4 • Registered • ECC • Single Ranked • DDR2-533 • 1.8V • 128Meg x 72

however, the dell website suggests,

Kingston - Memory - 4 GB - DIMM 240-pin - DDR II - 400 MHz / PC2-3200 - registered

I already have a gig in there, and want to take it up to 4 gb,
shoudl I just install 2x 2gb kits as it's much cheaper than 1x 4gb kit?

Can I install more memory alongside the old one, or should I replace all the memory modules in the PC?

the thing is the specifications from the dell website and the crucial website are different.

Do you mean that Dell is recommending PC2-3200 whilst Crucial are recommending PC2-4200?

If so, that will be because PC2-3200 is very very rare (I don't think Crucial sell it). PC2-4200 is the sensible option for the Poweredge 2800.

OK, Cool, will I have to replace all modules?

You reccomend CT419450
That is 1 x 2gb, will there be much difference in that and 2x 1gb modules?

Are you wanting to keep the current 1gb stick? Personally I wouldn't want to be mixing memory like that. I would take out the 1gb stick and just use whatever you decide to buy.

There's pretty much no difference between 1 x 2gb and 2 x 1gb, other than the single 2gb stick being cheaper. A single stick will also apply less stress to the northbridge than two sticks.
I really dont know what to do with the 2 x 512s already in there, if mixing isnt ideal then I will sell it and use 2x2gb.

Dont say 2x1gb allow dual channel or something? when they are supplied as "kits"
