Memory usage jumps up to 99%!!!

So lately my computer has been playing up (again)..

This time it's the memory. Last week I was transferring large folders (18GB-60GB) to an external hard drive and the memory usage would literally slowly creep up all the way to 99%.

Then in the past day or so when I try and watch a 1080p video file (the size of the file is 17GB) again the memory slowly creeps up to 99% which means I cannot do anything with the computer while the film is running and even after the film has finished I have to log off/restart my computer. And the video is jumpy too..

Why on earth is this happening? I haven't changed any settings on my computer. It's just randomly started.

I have checked task manager and nothing is reported as using high memory but the problem does lie within Windows Explorer (when I end this task the memory jumps back down to 20% or so). So it's not a program or anything like that.

Would love some help as this is getting quite an annoying problem! :(

EDIT: Found this from googling "I had this exact same issue a few weeks ago.

I always felt that the error reared it's ugly head whenever I was viewing a folder that contained a lot of .avi .mkv files. Does the problem occur for you in a similar situation?

Initially I found that if I ended the 'Explorer' Process that would resume my computer into a useable state. However it gets a bit tedious doing this constantly.

Therefore, I have a question. Have you installed the DIVX PLAYER application? I remember that once I had successfully removed this piece of software, my computer has never (touch wood) repeated the problem. My Computer has been on for many days now and I have constantly browsed through my folders that contain 70+ .avi/.mkv files.

My theory was that there was a memory leak caused by divx player in trying to render an image for the avi and mkv thumbnails"

That sounds exactly like the problem I'm facing so I've removed DIVX PLAYER with Revo Uninstaller.

Apparently it's to do with codecs?

Ok the problem has been finally solved, I'm so happy!

After doing some research people have worked out that the problem was to do with thumbnails in folders containing .mkv files (which was the exact source of the problem).

So you basically go to folder options > view > CHECK the first option "always show icons, never thumbnails".

Other people claimed that removing Divx solved the problem.

So just to be safe I did both steps, hope this helps anyone who ever encounters this annoying problem.
